NEW FAMILIES ARE SURFACING FROM U.S.A.
It is Feb. 22, 2006, 5.37 a.m., one of the many mornings being at the office early to get ahead with my work load, as a good Zarantonello would do.
I turn on the PC, the electronic mailer alerts me that there is a new email message. I opened it and, to my surprise (dismay), it is from a Zarantonello from Chicago, U.S.A.
An America Zarantonello checked out our web site and writes this message:
“I’m asking for information about the origins of our family. My great grandfather named Antonio Zarantonello was born in Cornedo, Italy in 1876. My grandfather, named Abramo Zarantonello was born in Valdagno, Italy in 1906. My father is Donald Zarantenello born in Illinois, U.S.A. in 1932. My name is Ronald Zarantenello born in Chicago, U.S.A. in 1963. My great grandfather emigrated to U.S.A. when my grandfather was only 7 months old. We would like very much to know our origins.”
I was astonished about this email, but all of this makes my day very happy. Mid morning I sent this email to my niece Roberta who is in charge of the incoming emails from the internet. Roberta quickly starts her search but we cannot find the genealogical tree connection of this family. She writes back telling them that we are looking deeper into their background, and that we are happy about their enquiry.
If you didn’t notice yet, at a certain point in time, the name was changed to Zarantenello, an (e) instead of the (o) after the (t).
This change in their last name appeared very strange to me and I couldn’t understand why, and, for a while, it bothered me.
Months went by and I had already forgotten the American Zarantenello, when on Sept. 10, 2006 a new email arrives from the American Zarantenello alerting us that the two brothers Z. will be in Vicenza, Italy, towards the end of the month and would like to meet with us.
From this, I understand without a doubt that they are really Zarantonello!!! They are also very stubborn people who wouldn’t let go of their objectives. In fact, with great pleasure on Oct. 1, Paolo of Vicenza plans a meeting with the Americans at Piana Di Valdagno together with the directive party.
They were able to find a room, on their own, at the Hotel Ca’ Masieri owned by a Zarantonello.

The meeting took place Oct. 1st in Piana Di Valdagno, town of origins of the Zarantonello clan from 1780.
Aldo and I arrived a little late that evening, but Paolo of Vicenza with his directive party, took the two Americans to see the Zarantonello neighborhood where the Zarantonello story began.
We met the two Americans born in 1963 and noticed they looked so much alike... immediately they told us they were twin brothers.
During the evening spent at the pizza restaurant, the meeting place of all our Zarantonello meetings when we are in the Veneto region, we feel always welcome there with great warmth even from the owner of the establishment who recalls the memories of the grand 1991 reunion.
During the meeting, Paolo of Vicenza and Susy, my wife, would translate simultaneously everything the twins were telling us: the trip to Italy, the visit to Tuscany with their friends and having to leave them to come to this meeting. Ron informed us that he is the Manager of an important advertising agency and Mario a Realtor with Century21. I couldn’t help but noticing that the logo on his card was the same logo of Gianna’s card who works as a Realtor in Daytona Florida. I, right away, asked for explanations and Mario confirmed that they both worked for the same corporate agency and that they have already corresponded via email and already knew each other.

Their family is composed of 6 children, 3 boys and three girls and their father is still living. We exchanged a lot of information and then, finally we found out about the (e) in their last name.
Ron explained that when his great grandfather and grandfather arrived in U.S.A. the immigration officials misinterpreted their handwritten name. Therefore, from that moment on, the name was left with an (e) after the (t) instead of an (o). But Ron who said the meeting had been fantastic because he met good people, kind and available, made the statement that he intend to go to New York to search the immigrants archives and start the paperwork to change back their last name to its original spelling.
They Are Remarkable!!!
I noticed in them a strong need to get closer to their roots now that they have found them, and the promise was that on May 27, 2007 they will be present in Vicenza with several of their family members.
It is getting late, the evening is now ending and, as usual, departing becomes difficult after such a wonderful meeting, but we all have to let go, leaving with tears in our eyes, hoping that this meeting will happen again next year.
In the meantime weeks go by...........
In my head the story of the meeting with the American Zarantonello doesn’t end here.
While I was speaking with an engineer friend of mine, he tells me that he is opening an office in Chicago. Naturally I take advantage of this opportunity to send some material of past reunions to the Z. in Chicago. I sent them some video cassettes of Novellara and Este reunions and Zarantonello day newspaper.
A day or so later, I get another email from Ron and Mario that says: we are really enthusiastic of being counted as members of the Italian Zarantonello families and, Sunday next, we have organized a meeting with all our family members Zarantenello to view the videos. It will be a great day of festivities by calling it our Italian relatives day.

EMERGONO NUOVE FAMIGLIE DAGLI USA
22 Febbraio 2006, ore 5,37 del mattino, una delle tante mattine in ufficio presto per portarmi avanti con il lavoro, da buon Z.
Accendo il computer, la posta elettronica mi avvisa di un nuovo messaggio.
Ma guarda un po’: Zarantonello Ron dagli Stati Uniti d’America, esattamente da Chicago. Uno Z. americano ha consultato il nostro sito internet e ci scrive. Il suo messaggio diceva:
chiedo informazioni sulle origini della mia famiglia.
Il bisnonno si chiamava Zarantonello Antonio nato a Cornedo nel 1876 Italy, il nonno si chiamava Zarantonello Abramo nato a Valdagno nel 1906 Italy, mio padre si chiama Zarantenello Donald B. nato nell’ Illinois nel 1932 USA.
Io mi chiamo Zarantenello Ronald nato a Chicago nel 1963 USA.
Il mio nonno è emigrato in Usa il 28 maggio 1907 quando mio padre aveva solo 7 mesi. Ci piacerebbe tanto conoscere le nostre origini.
Rimango sorpreso da questa e-mail, e sapere di ciò mi rallegra la giornata.
A metà mattina invio questa e-mail a mia nipote Roberta Z. che è l’incaricata per i rapporti con tutti gli scriventi su internet.
Roby si allerta subito a cercare info ma non troviamo collegamenti sull’albero genealogico e quindi scrive loro dicendo che stiamo cercando notizie, e grati per la richiesta li salutiamo. Forse non avrete notato ma ad un certo punto del messaggio il cognome è diventato Zarantenello, la parte centrale, porta una (e) al posto di una (o).
Questa differenza nel cognome appare strana e non capisco il perché, mi rimugina per parecchio tempo nella testa.
Passano mesi e mi scordo degli americani ma un bel giorno, il 10 ottobre 2006 una nuova mail dice che alla fine del mese in corso i due fratelli Z. americani saranno a Vicenza e gradirebbero un incontro. Da qui capisco che sono veri Z!!!!!! Anch’essi sono molto caparbi e non mollano mai la presa sugli obiettivi proposti. Difatti, con immenso piacere il 1° ottobre Paolo di Vicenza organizza un incontro con gli Z. americani alla Piana di Valdagno insieme al direttivo.
Essi sono riusciti a trovare soggiorno al Hotel Cà Masier che è di proprietà di uno Z.
Troppo forti!!!!!
L’incontro è avvenuto la sera del 1° ottobre alla Piana di Valdagno paese d’origine degli Z. dal 1780 circa. Io e Aldo arrivammo un pò tardi quella sera ma Paolo di Vicenza e il direttivo portarono i due americani a vedere la contrada Z. proprio lì ebbe inizio tutta la storia degli Z.
Incontrammo i due americani Ron e Mario nati nel 1963 erano due gocce d’acqua e subito ci dissero di essere gemelli. Durante la serata trascorsa in pizzeria, luogo d’incontro per le nostre riunioni in terra veneta, veniamo sempre accolti con grande calore e anche il giovane ristoratore ci saluta con tanto entusiasmo, reduce dei ricordi della grandissima festa del 1991.
Durante l’incontro Paolo (VI) e Susy mia moglie traducevano simultaneamente ciò che i due gemelli raccontavano: il loro viaggio in Italia, la visita in Toscana con i loro amici e poi si sono staccati per questo incontro. Ron di professione è un dirigente di una importante agenzia pubblicitaria, mentre Mario e un noto venditore immobiliare. Coincidenza vuole che sul biglietto da visita ho notato lo stesso marchio della stessa agenzia immobiliare di Z. Gianna che si trova a Daytona in Florida, e subito voglio sapere. Mario mi conferma che è la stessa agenzia e si sono già sentiti via mail.

La loro famiglia è composta da 6 fratelli e il papà è ancora in vita. Ci sono stati tanti scambi di informazioni e poi finalmente siamo riusciti a sapere il perché di quella (e) nel cognome. Ron ci ha spiegato che nel 1907 quando suo nonno sbarcò negli USA, all’ufficio immigrazione non interpretarono in modo corretto il cognome scritto a mano e da allora il loro cognome è leggermente diverso, proprio per colpa di quella (e). Ron però ha detto che questo incontro è stato per loro meraviglioso perché ha conosciuto delle persone veramente buone, gentili e disponibili proprio come sono loro. Si è ripromesso che al suo rientro andrà a New York all’archivio degli immigrati per iniziare la pratica per riportare il loro cognome all’autenticità.
Sono dei grandi.!!!
Ho notato in essi un gran voglia di legarsi alle nostre origini ritrovate e la promessa è stata che il 27 maggio 2007 saranno presenti in Vicenza in gran forza con tutta la loro famiglia.
È ormai tarda serata e come al solito i saluti sono difficili dopo un incontro di questo genere, ma purtroppo ci dobbiamo lasciare con le lacrime agli occhi sperando che l’anno prossimo questo incontro si avveri.
Intanto passa qualche settimana...........
Nella mia testa la storia dell’incontro con gli americani non finisce qui. Dopo tre settimane parlando con un mio amico ingegnere mi dice di avere aperto un ufficio a Chicago e naturalmente non mi faccio scappare l’occasione di inviare a Ron e Mario, materiale inerente alle feste precedenti degli Z.
Ho inviato le cassette dei filmati delle feste di Novellara ed Este, e copia del giornalino Zarantonello Day.
Dopo qualche giorno mi arriva una mail da Ron & Mario che dice: Siamo veramente entusiasti di essere annoverati come membri delle famiglie Z. italiane e domenica prossima abbiamo organizzato un incontro con tutti i nostri familiari Z, per visionare il filmati, sarà un grande giorno di festa all’insegna dei nostri parenti italiani.

LETTERA ORIGINALE DI RON
I spoke to my father this evening who was able to give me limited information regarding his family history.
Antonio and Teresa Zarantonello came to the USA in 1907 with their son Abramo who was just 7 months old. After arriving to the USA, the young Zarantonello family settled 50 miles outside Chicago at Lehigh, Illinois where they lived on a farm with their growing family. Antonio also worked at a stone Quarry. Antonio and Teresa eventually had more children: Mary, Estelle, Eugene, Reno, Ida, Mabel and Josephine. There were a few other children born that passed away when young, I do not have their names at this writing. Abramo (b. 1906) who was born in Italy is my grandfather. As of this writing, two of my great aunts are still living; I will soon have a meeting with them to gather additional information.
Antonio and Teresa with their children eventually moved back to the city of Chicago during the 1930’s and settled in the area known as Kensington – a Chicago neighborhood. Antonio continued to work in the stone and terrazzo field. Antonio passed the craft to Abramo who also worked as a stone and terrazzo artisan.
Sometime during the 1920’s our family name was misspelled by the US Government and was never corrected by Abramo. To note, Abramo also changed his name and is also known as Bruno.
Abramo (1906 – 1974) married Eva Rossi in 1931 and had 2 children: Donald and Dolores. Shortly after the birth of Dolores; Abramo (Bruno) and Eva divorced with Abramo (Bruno) moving to the state of Michigan where he eventually remarried, then moved with his 2nd wife to Los Angeles, California. Abramo (Bruno) Zarantenello passed away in 1974.
My father is Donald – born 1932 and is currently retired here near Chicago. He is active within our family and with his half-siblings. His sister Dolores passed away in 2001. Dolores had 3 children: Pamela, Gary and Nancy – who all live in Florida.
Donald married Julie Ann Piotrowski in 1953 and had 6 children:
Karen – 26 Nov. 1956. (Has 3 sons: Anthony, Matthew and Daniel)
Donna – 02 Nov. 1958 (has 3 Children: Cesha, Charles and Sarah)
Reno – 22 Dec. 1959 (No children)
Joan – 15 Jun. 1962 (No Children)
Mario – 30 Oct. 1963 (No Children)
Ronald – 30 Oct. 1963 (No Children)
After my parents, Donald and Julie married; they formed several construction businesses as concrete contractors and commercial construction contractors. My father worked at jobsites while my mother ran the office and operations. The family business employed many men who built commercial and industrial buildings all over the south suburban area of Chicago. All of us children worked for the business at one time or another, while on summer break from school. We all eventually chose careers other than construction with the exception of my brother Reno who is self-employed in the state of Michigan. Karen is a superintendent of a large metal factory. Donna is employed as an administrative manager. Joan is a clerk for a large retail organization. Mario changed his career from Hospital/clinical cancer research to Real Estate in Michigan. I, Ron am an executive at GSP Marketing Services in Chicago for approximately 20 years. As a hobby, Mario and I have been a team where we purchase residential real estate and renovate to resell. We have been active with this for about 10 years outside of our professional careers. We do most of the renovation work ourselves, from design to construction, electrical, plumbing, etc. We also have been very active within automobile associations.
Our mother passed away in 1998, suddenly of heart failure.
We are a fun-loving family that enjoys spending time together to celebrate birthdays, holidays and other celebrations. Due to circumstances, we did not know much of the Zarantonello family. Mario and I are the first Zarantonello of our immediate family to visit Italy in 99 years. Soon, we will make contact with the children of Abramo’s brothers and sisters to learn more of their family and history and perhaps use their history to help us learn more of our family history.
Karen and Donna are also grandmothers. Both of their eldest children have already started their young families.
We are excited and honored that you want to include us within the Zarantonello. This evening Mario and I celebrated our birthday at the home of our sister Karen where we shared the VHS tapes and DVD that Massimo sent to me. We are very impressed with viewing the Africa work of the Zarantonello and look forward to learning more information. Next month during the American holiday of Thanksgiving, we will again view the Zarantonello video tapes of past meetings. I will do my best to contact as many American Zarantonello (and Zarantenello) to entice as many to join us at the 2007 Zarantonello at Vicenza. And with the help of Gianna in Florida, we will try to have them join in 2009.

Ho parlato a mio padre questa sera ed è stato in grado di darmi informazioni limitate sulla storia della sua famiglia.

Nacquero altri bambini ma morirono giovani, non ho i loro nomi al momento. Abramo nato nel 1906 in Italia è mio nonno. Al momento due dei miei prozii sono ancora in vita; li incontrerò presto per avere ulteriori informazioni.

Da notare che Abramo ha cambiato anche il suo nome ed è attualmente conosciuto come Bruno.

Mio padre seguiva i cantieri e mia madre andava per uffici. L’azienda di famiglia occupava molti dipendenti, uomini che hanno costruito immobili commerciali e industriali in tutta la periferia sud di Chicago. Tutti noi figli lavoravamo per l’azienda di famiglia, quando potevamo e durante le vacanze estive. Tutti noi abbiamo poi scelto carriere alternative al mondo delle costruzioni con l’eccezione di mio fratello Reno che lavora in proprio nello stato del Michigan. Karen è supervisore di una grande azienda che produce metalli, Donna è un’impiegata amministrativa, Joan è un commesso in una grande azienda al dettaglio. Mario ha cambiato il suo lavoro, da ricercatore sul cancro a immobiliarista. Ed io, Ron, sono un executive alla GSP Marketing Service a Chicago da 20 anni. Come hobby, Mario ed io siamo in un gruppo che compra, ristruttura e rivende, immobili. Questo “hobby” lo stiamo portando avanti da 10 anni. La maggior parte dei lavori di ristrutturazione la facciamo noi, dal progetto alla costruzione, facciamo gli elettricisti, gli idraulici ecc. Ci interessiamo anche di associazioni di automobili.
Nostra madre è morta nel 1998, per un improvviso attacco di cuore.
Facciamo parte di una famiglia che si ama molto, amiamo trascorrere insieme compleanni, vacanze, e altre feste. Viste le circostanze non conosciamo molto della famiglia Zarantonello. Mario e Io siamo stati i primi Zarantonello che della nostra famiglia hanno visitato l’Italia in 99 anni. Presto ci metteremo in contatto con i figli dei fratelli e delle sorelle di Abramo per saperne di più della loro famiglia e forse sapere di più di loro ci aiuterà a sapere di più sulla nostra famiglia.
Le mie sorelle Karen e Donna sono anche nonne. Entrambi i loro figli più grandi hanno già messo su famiglia.
Siamo eccitati ed onorati che ci avete voluto includere negli Zarantonello. Questa sera Io e Mario festeggiamo il nostro compleanno a casa di nostra sorella Karen dove visioneremo le cassette e i DVD che Gianfranco ci ha fatto recapitare. Siamo stati molto colpiti dal tuo lavoro in Africa e vorremmo saperne di più. Il mese prossimo per il giorno del ringraziamento visioneremo anche i filmati dei vecchi meetings. Farò del mio meglio per contattare quanti più Zarantonello americani (e Zarantenello) per convincerli ad unirci a noi nel 2007 a Vicenza. E con l’aiuto di Gianna in Florida cercheremo di portarli li nel 2009. Teniamoci in contatto per l’approssimarsi del meeting 2007. Vogliamo incontrarvi di nuovo. Saluti a Gianfranco.
